KOI CARP

  • For the breeding of koi carp, tank of 250-500 litre capacity with weeds like Ceratophyllum demersum or Hydrilla sp., which serves as substrate for the adhesive eggs released by this fish. Water in the breeding tank should have a temperature 25-30ºC, pH 7.5-8.5 and dissolved oxygen 6-8 ppm. The male and female brood fishes are introduced in the breeding tank at 2:1. Koi breeds twice in a year under tropical water conditions. However, pituitary hormone administration prior to spawning at the rate of 1 mg/kg body weight of fish could promote sexual maturity and egg development. A female koi weighing 150-200 g may lay as many as 2000-3000 eggs in a single spawning. The eggs measure 1 mm in dia. After an incubation period of 30 hours, hatching normally takes place at 27 - 28.5ºC. The hatchlings are fed with infusorians thrice a day. The hatchlings are stocked separately in rearing tanks for enhanced survival and growth.
