Lesson 04:Landscape Plants

Introduction

Plants form a major component of landscape gardens. They have various qualities to fit in to the garden designs. In landscape designs plants are used for architectural aspects. They create space and define areas. They screen, buffer, and provide privacy. They can be used in controlling circulation and traffic. Some of the other qualities of plants are their ability to control odours, glare and reflection, and acoustics to varying degrees. Plants also accommodate wildlife, birds, butterflies, and insects, squirrels etc that add interest to the garden. Plants are indispensible part of landscape architects requirements for a garden. A garden should be more than a collection of individual plants. Different types of plant material can be used in landscape.

  • Shade trees should receive first attention, as they take time to grow. They should be set out as soon as possible. Trees will grow while one can proceed with the lesser elements in the landscape.
  • Use of too many shade trees, unless the property is large will diminish the importance of smaller ornamental trees.
  • Smaller ornamental trees can play an important and colourful role in landscape.
  • Evergreens such as pines and firs will not grow so tall as large shade trees. Their conical form offers interesting contrast and they remain green during the winter.
  • Ornamental trees include a huge selection of trees and shrubs that do not grow much higher . They suit to all garden designs.
  • Evergreen shrubs are interesting with their year- round green foliage.
  • Ground covers and lawns must be chosen according to area. A lawn is an important element of the landscape because it offers a welcome, smooth contrast to other plants.
  • Shrubs, trees, and other plants are more interesting when set against the background of lawn.
  • Flowers can play a big seasonal part in a landscape plan.
