Appliances for watering

  1. Watering can: Watering cans made of galvanized iron sheet of eight to ten liter capacity are convenient for handling. The nozzle breaking the force of water ensures its wide and uniform distribution

  2. Seedling watering can: In order to irrigate freshly sown seed or newly sprouted seedlings, this type of watering cans are used. These watering cans of smaller capacity are fitted with fine nose with minute holes at the end of a long spout. Due to fine nose, the water fall gently on seeds or seedlings without displacing or damaging them

  3. Bucket: Buckets of different sizes made of either galvanized metal or polyethylene are also widely used for watering and carrying seeds, fertilizer and sundry articles

  4. Syringe: It is a 40-50 cm long narrow brass cylinder fitted with a mouthpiece having many pores. It is often used for sprinkling water on the foliage of house plants or indoor plants. With a little practice the spray can be made fine or coarse at will. A reversed nozzle may be used for syringing the lower surface of the leaves.

  5. Garden hose: A garden hose is required for carrying water to distant part of the garden from a tap. Most of the hosepipes are made either from rubber or polyethylene. Rubber hose lasts longer than polyethylene but is costlier. Rubber hoses may have smooth or corrugated outer surface and one or two layers of threads are embedded inside. Polyethylene pipes are lighter in weight and can be handled with less effort. Continuous exposure to sun causes hardening and reduces the life of these pipes.

  6. Sprinklers: Sprinkler automatically delivers a fine spray of water over a specific area. It distributes water more economically. Besides, water penetrates into the soil better than other devices. A sprinkler is usually attached to a garden hose or water pipe fitted with high pressure tap. Various types of sprinklers are available to meet the requirements of different crops. Some are preferable for irrigating flower beds or vegetable plots and some are suited to a lawn. Most of the sprinklers are of rotating type. There is also an oscillating type which is specially suited for watering the lawns. Both types work under water pressure. Hence, higher the pressure better is the coverage
