General garden equipment

  1. Wheel barrows: These are used for carrying plants, soil, manures, pots and collecting garden debris. They are of mainly two types-pans and box. Both the types are made from iron sheets and two iron handles are provided to operate the wheel barrow

  2. Baskets: Baskets of medium size either made from cane or bamboo are mostly used in garden for carrying plants, soil and materials. Such as, compost and garden debris. Compared to bamboo baskets the cane baskets are heavier, expensive but last longer

  3. Roller: Garden roller made of metal, varying in size and weight is used for levelling the ground and consolidating the soil before sowing grass seeds or turfing the lawn. Use of roller is not suggested on established lawn as it makes the soil hard and compact which suppresses root growth.

  4. Pickaxe: This implement has a wooden handle fixed in the middle point of a bow-shaped heavy rectangular piece of steel. One end of this, is pointed to break hard surface and the other end is flat for digging rocky ground.

  5. Shovel: Shovel is often used to handle the manures. fertilizers, soil, sand, leaf mould, etc.

    Sieves: Garden sieves having a mesh of 3-12 mm are necessary for screening out coarse material from soil or potting compost. Screened soil and leaf mould are necessary for the preparation of seed compost and covering seeds lightly after sowing on the seed bed.


  6. Garden gloves A number of gloves are used to keep the hands clean when handling soil and compost and to protect from thorns particularly when plantings or pruning thorny plants like rose, cacti and many other succulents with spikes and toms. The gloves are usually made of fabric and leather, some are vinyl-coated
