A double pointed straight dart (Couture dart)

FUNDAMENTALS OF CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION 3(1+2)
Lesson 9 : Fullness

A double pointed straight dart (Couture dart)

This dart is given on the front and back of ladies shirts, tops, kameez and the back side of the safari suits. It has two ends with widest width at the waist, one end on the upper side, and another on the lower side. Generally this is stitched in two steps from wide centre to one edge first and again from wide centre to another end.

Since darts are part of the pattern design to fit a garment to the body, one should make sure they are correctly positioned on the figure. Darts should be directed toward the fullest part of the body curve. For a large body curve, two small darts will usually fit better than one large dart. Dart placement should be always checked to make any necessary adjustments before permanently stitching and pressing. Darts when partially stitched are called dart tucks.
