Thread shirrs – Hand and machine

As for making gathers, parallel rows of stitching at a distance of 1cm are made. The number of rows depends on the area to be covered. Bobbin threads are pulled together at the same time, sliding shirring along them to distribute the stretched folds as well as fullness evenly to the exact size required.

One of the two ways of staying shirring may be used to avoid strain on shirring.

1. From the wrong side, back stitch along the rows of gathering, over each gathering thread.
2. A strip of self, sheer or net fabric slightly bigger than the shirring can be placed it on the wrong side and sewn using running stitches or whip stitches.
