Lesson 9 : Fullness

Machine Gathers

Machine gathering is a quicker method of making gathers than hand gathering and it also requires less skill. It distributes the fullness more evenly because of the evenness and firmness of the stitch after pulling. The needle-thread tension is loosened slightly to make it easier to pull the bobbin thread later. The stitch length is set for a long stitch, generally the heavier the fabric, the longer the stitch. Firm, closely woven fabric generally requires longer stitch and lesser tension for gathering.
