Ruffles and frills

A ruffle is a strip of fabric cut or handled in such a ways as to produce fullness. These are used for the purpose of adding decoration to a garment. Sometimes they are used at the hems of skirts and dresses to add length.

Frills can be gathered or pleated cut on straight, bias or circular to produce flare and adds decoration too. It is important to allow sufficient fullness for the gathering, but the amount to be allowed varies with the type of fabric. They can be used as single or in tiers to trim many parts of the garment viz., neckline, wrist, hem. Light weight and sheer fabrics are most suitable for making ruffles and frills.
