Collection and examination of rumen liquor

COLLECTION AND EXAMINATION

Collection: Fluid can be collected by puncture of rumen using a needle with a syringe attached and inserted in front of the left flank folds.

Examination:

  • Color: Varies according to the feed from Grey olive to brownish green pure green in grazing animals. Grey in fodder eating animals.
  • Consistency: normally slightly viscous.
  • Odour: normally aromatic odour and not the repellent odour.
  • pH: 5.5-7.0.
  • Ciliates and flagellates are present.
  • Bacteria: normally 107-1012/ml of rumen fluid.
