Taste buds and Mucus secreting cells

TASTE BUDS AND MUCUS SECRETING CELLS 

  • These are found on the lips, buccopharynx, oral valves and barbels of fishes which help in sorting out food.
  • Numerous taste buds are present on the lips and buccopharynx of catla, mrigal, etc.,
  • Taste buds are rare in many omnivorous and predatory fishes as they feed by sight (less buds in murrel).
  • Mucus secreting cells are present in buccopharynx of all the teleosts and secrete a large amount of mucus to lubricate for easy swallowing.
