Stomach

STOMACH 

  • Part of the alimentary canal lying between the oesophagus and intestine.
  • Although true stomach is present in many species of fishes, it is absent is some specics; lamprey, hagfish, minnows, pipe fishes and parrot fishes
  • In teleost, the muscle is one layered but, fishes like mullet and gizzard, shad have three layers of smooth muscle with a thick mucus cuticulr lining called, gizzard.
  • In stomachless fishes, the anterior part of the intestine is swollen to form a sac behind the oesophagus. This structure serves for the storage of food is known as intestinal bulb or intestinal swelling (catla and rohu)
  • Stomach of fishes vary in shape and size according to the diet
  • Usually the stomach is bent, more or less, muscular tube shaped like I, J, U, V, Y. Internally the stomach can be divided into cardiac (desending part) and pyloric (ascending part)
