Oesophagus

OESOPHAGUS 

  • It is a muscular structure organ lying over the lobes of liver and pancreas between pharynx and stomach.
  • Function: To transfer food to the stomach by means of wave like contractions along its length. Mucus production, food storage or preparation of food by grinding or crushing and for respiration
  • Oesophagus in herbivores fishes is short and are like distensible tubes than those in  predatory fishes.
  • It is a short and narrow tube in herbivorous and omnivorous fishes (common carp, rohu and catla)
  • Carnivorous and predatory fishes that feed on prey of large size possess a longer and distensible oesophagus (freshwater shark, murrel and catfish)
