It is the large gland precent in all the fishes. In shark, it covers 20 – 30% of their body mass. It lies over or partially surrounding the stomach. It is bilobed and the left lobe is larger than the right lobe. It is dark brown in colour

One hepatic duct originates from each lobe of the liver and joins the cystic duct from the gall bladder to form the bile duct.

Function: Bile secretion and glycogen storage in addition to other biochemical processes.

The secretions are poured into the intestine through the bile duct

It is made up of small hepatocytes that contains high level of golgi apparatus, lysosome, lipid and glycogen deposits along with numerous mitochondria.

In sharks the hydrocarbons and squaline are stored in liver.
