Lips

LIPS

  • In fishes, the lips are either suctorial in function or hold fast (as in loach fish)
  • In fishes with suckers, the lips are mobile and plicate (having folds) or papilaose (having tufts of skin or papillae)
  • In hill stream fishes, lips function as hold fast (Hill stream loaches and some catfishes).
  • In some fishes, mouth is small and its inner surface of lips has rasp-like folds to scrape algae from stones.
