RECTUM, ANUS AND CLOACA 

Rectum

  • Morphologically, there is no distinction between the rectum and intestine
  • This part is thicker than the normal intestine
  • Large number of mucus secreting cells produce mucus to lubricate food and help in easy ejection of faeces
  • It contains some microvilli, helpful in osmoregulation
  • Rectal gland is present in shark, the function of which is to remove excess NaCl.

Anus

  • It is the posterior opening of alimentary canal through which undigested materials (faeces) are ejected out.

Cloaca

  • It is the urogential pore
  • It is usually present in primitive fishes like shark, ray and skate
