BRAIN

  • The brain is regulating centre for all the receptors. The brain is enclosed in a cranium, which is cartilaginous in elasmobranches and bony in teleosts.
  • The brain has three main divisions

Prosencephalon or fore brain

  • The fore brain has two main parts
    • Telencephalon
    • Diencephalon
  • Telencephalon: It is the most anterior part of the fore brain, mainly responsible for reception, conduction of smell impulse. Fore brain consists of two parts. The anterior paired olfactory bulb and posterior and slender and are known as olfactory bulbs which possess internal cavities called brain having lateral ventricles I and II.
  • Diencephalon: It is covered dorsally by the posterior bulgings of the cerebral hemispheres. It is visible between cerebral hemispheres and optic lobes. It is distinguished into three parts. i.e dorsal epithalamus, lateral thalamis and a ventral hypothalamus.
