2.3.4.1. Polystyrene

Polystyrene resins are made by co-polymerising styrene with the cross linker, divinyl benzene. Sulphonation of cross-linked polystyrene gives sulphonated polystyrene resin which is a strong cation exchanger (eg. Dowex 50). Anion exchangers are prepared by reacting cross-linked polystyrene with chlormethylether and then the chlorogroup is ionized with tertiary amine –CH2N+(CH3)3Cl- groups.
