2.6.1. Two techniques

Gas-Solid Chromatography (GSC)

Gas solid chromatography has a solid stationary phase that physically adsorbs the compounds leading to their retention on the column. It is mainly applicable for the separation of specific low molecular weight compounds. It retains active or polar molecules for longer time and cause severe tailing of elution peaks that have restricted their use.

Gas-Liquid Chromatography (GLC)

Gas liquid chromatography has a thin layer of a liquid stationary phase immobilised inside the column and the compounds get partitioned between gas mobile phase and liquid stationery phase. It is the widely adopted and the most useful technique.
