o North American freshwater catfishes

o Freshwater; North America (Southern Canada to Guatemala)

o Four pairs of barbels on head; skin naked.

o Dorsal (except in prietella) and pectoral fins with a spine

o Dorsal fin usually with six soft rays

o Palate tooth less except in fossil Astephus

o Three species of unrelated blind (eye less)

o Cat fishes are known (Satan, Triglo glanis and pritella)

  1. Ictalurus spp (Channel cat fish)

- about 9 species among which 5 species are only in Mexico and Guatemala.

- Trigloglanis – one species

- Ameiurus sp (bull heads) – seven species

- Noturus spp – 25 species

- Stone cat and madroms which have a poison gland at base of pectoral

spine.
