4.2.6 Rasbora heteromorpha

Family: Cyprinidae

Genus: Rasbora

English name: Harlequin Fish, Red Rasbora

Origin: Indonesia, Sumatra, Thailand

Size: Approximately 4.5 cm

Habitat: Found in schools in marshy pools, mountain rivulets and densely shaded overgrown streams.

Shape, coloring and markings:

The body is deep, elongated and laterally very compressed. The lateral line is incomplete. The basic coloration is silvery-grey with pale red to iridescent violet overtones. A prominent blue-black cone-shaped patch lies on the rear half of the body: the area in front has an attractive golden glint. The fins are yellowish: the dorsal and anal fins have a red gleam at the base and the anterior rays are brown-red to black. See under R. hengeli for differences in the patterning.

Females have more rounded bellies and are more robust.

Males are much slimmer. The lowest point of the cone-shaped patch lies over the base of the ventral fin.
