4.2.1 Identification of Freshwater Fishes

The fresh water ornamental fishes come under different families of fin fishes and the fin fish taxonomy comes under the class Osteichthyes. The class Osteichthyes contains several subclasses, including the Paleopterygii, the Crossopterygii and the Neopterygii. The first two of these subclasses are again of little interest to aquarists: virtually all tropical aquarium fish are found in the subclass Neopterygii.
