Family: Gasteropelecidae Genus: GasteropelecusI English name: Silver Hatchet fish Origin: The lower reaches of the Amazon Size: Maximum 6 cm Habitat: Found in sluggish streams, the still waters of lakes and pools and marshes. Shape, coloring and markings: The body is hatchet-shaped and laterally very compressed. The basic coloration is yellowish to a dull silver, which gleams when illuminated. A dark longitudinal stripe runs from the gill covers to the root of the caudal peduncle and is bordered above and below by a lighter zone. A dark transverse band lies on the caudal peduncle: there is a prominent patch on the dorsal fin. The fins are colorless and transparent. There are no known external sexual characteristics although males are often slightly smaller than females. |
