Origin: South and southeast USA, Mexico

Size: Males to 7 cm females tp 9 cm

Habitat: Common in both fresh and brackish waters.

Shape, coloring and markings:

The body is elongated and broad, laterally somewhat compressed. The dorsal fin is large and in males ,may be very high indeed. The basic coloration is brownish: the back is a dark olive green to brown: the back is a dark olive green to brown: the flanks are light blur to salmon with a vivid pearly sheen and five or six horizontal lines of blue, green and red dots. The throat and belly are white: the latter may have dark transverse banks. The powerful dorsal fin is light blue with light and dark marks between the rays and a yellow border. The upper half of the caudal fin is orange, blue, with elongated sword shaped rays and a pattern of dots and marks.

Females are less vividly colored and have a smaller dorsal fin
