4.2.11 Thayeria obliqua
Family: Characidae Genus: Thayeria English name: Penguin Fish Origin: The lower reaches of the Amazon basin Size: Maximum 8 cm Habitat: Found in jungle streams with dense vegetation on the banks and water rich in humus. Shape, Coloring And Markings: The body is slender and laterally somewhat compressed. The basic coloration is a light yellow or sill-very-white. The back is dark green or brown, with an attractive golden sheen: the belly is white or a muddy yellow. A zone of dark pigmentation bordered below by gold, begins at the back of the dorsal fin, grows much darker at the level of the adipose fin and extends back to the lower lobe of the caudal fin, where it meets a green or gold spot. The base of the dorsal fin is yellow to brown: otherwise the fins are colorless and transparent. There are no known external sexual characteristics. |
